Leftist Theme of Trump as Fascist Absurd, Ahistorical

A meme permeating the leftist firmament compares President Donald Trump to famous fascists and dictators, including Hitler. This obscenity is promoted by the likes of Robert B. Reich in his columns. I respond as an American Jew who lost previous generations of family members to the Nazi Holocaust.

Trump is not like Hitler because Trump is not that far to the left. Despite the occasional rhetorical regression to the left, such as drawing moral equivalence between the United States and Putin’s Russia during an interview with Bill O’Reilly, or marking Holocaust remembrance without mentioning Jews, President Trump is a true conservative. As such, he is more ideologically distant from Nazism than, say, Robert B. Reich and his fellow authoritarians.

In fact, President Trump threatens to dismantle the nanny state the American left has worked so hard to build. Such American style nanny-statism, sans the anti-Semitism, was the hallmark of Nazi Germany. The Nazis controlled health, education, welfare, policing, the media, academia, cultural institutions, and as many aspects of the lives of their citizens as possible. Conservatives advocate the opposite, smaller government and individual responsibility. While Nazism was anti-Christian and certainly anti-Jewish, a trait the American left seems to emulate in more subtle forms, conservatives tend to view rights as emanating from God and not the state. Indeed, this principle was well articulated by President Trump in his inaugural speech.

To set the historic record straight, Nazism and Fascism were accurately viewed as leftwing progressive movements in the years leading up to World War II. This becomes more apparent with a study of Hitler’s speeches, his call for dismantling corporations, his rant against private ownership and wealth. If the word “Jew” were replaced in those speeches with words like “corporate interests” they sound an awful lot like Elizabeth Warren.

The American far left was pro-Hitler and pro-Stalin circa 1939-1941, the first years of World War II. Only when the Nazi Socialist Hitler double-crossed his fellow leftist, his communist ally Stalin on June 22, 1941, with a full-scale Nazi invasion of Soviet Russia known as Operation Barbarossa, did Nazism suddenly become “right-wing.” The American far left responded to that invasion by changing, literally overnight, from the peace party to the party of super-hawks and patriots.

When the left hurls “Hitler” at Trump they are, to use a Freudian term, projecting. Indeed, this is often the case with the left. It is observable that often the things that they are screaming about the loudest are the things that they are themselves covering up. Most leftists are not often not conscious of their own culpability. Yet this in no way excuses their lies, especially when they accuse an American leader of being a Nazi.
