The Day President Bush Landed on the Flight Deck of the Intrepid

The Day President Bush Landed on the Flight Deck of the Intrepid

By    |   Monday, 03 December 2018 12:10 PM EST

“Don’t let the critics discourage you or push you off course.”

A man for all seasons Lieutenant, JG United States Navy, War Hero, Congressman, Ambassador to the United Nations, Chief Envoy to China, Director of the CIA, The Vice President, and President of the United States of America. Most importantly a great son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. To his children — President George Walker, Robin in heaven with his First Lady Barbara, Governor Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and the entire Bush family, his official and personal team members and friends — Bryan and I extend our most heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers to you all.

He was a true Patriot, Shipmate, Statesman, an extraordinary leader and a truly honorable man.

We will never forget the day that President Bush landed his helicopter on the flight deck of the Intrepid.

He and his wife, First Lady Barbara, and I walked the flight deck to his motorcade. To his surprise we had arranged the entire crew of his World War II aircraft to be on the flight deck to greet him. Additionally, we had arranged for an Avenger similar to the one he flew in World War II to be on the flight deck with them. We had painted “Barbara” outside the pilot window on the plane just as it was back then.

He had tears in his eyes and he spent almost an hour with the men who served with him.

It was truly one of the greatest days of my 20 years at the Intrepid seeing President Bush with his brother Warriors having such a great time reminiscing about the brotherhood, defending our country, and protecting our freedoms.

Thank you and God bless you President Bush — we love you and we will always remember you, miss you and honor your herculean service to America!

Here are some pictures of that glorious day June 6, 1994 — the 50th Anniversary of D-Day.

Here is also the letter that President Bush 41 wrote to incoming President Bill Clinton. It shows exactly what kind of a man G.H.W. Bush is and how we all can learn an incredibly valuable lesson from this letter and from him. He is saying no matter I disagreed with you, no matter I lost to you, no matter that pain is stinging — I will support you and I wish you the best of success because you are now “my president — our president.” And that, friends, in my opinion, is the measure of the man — wow — what a lesson for today.

He will be teaching us great life and national lessons for centuries to come. The note ended exactly with these words, “Your success now is our country’s success. I am rooting hard for you.”

Mr. President, we wish you fair winds and following seas!
