More than 90 percent of Lake Michigan is covered in ice, which is the most in recorded history, in spite of the meltdown last week.
According to data from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, the other record-breaking years were 1976, 1979, and 1994,

In mid-February, the lake was at 80 percent coverage and dropped to 40 percent by Feb. 26, due to a warming spell, but by March 2 the ice had expanded significantly, passing 90 percent coverage.
As temperatures dropped again, there were predictions that the ice coverage would increase by another 15 percent, not the 50 percent increase that took place.
By comparison, in 2013 Lake Michigan had 20 percent ice coverage.
All of the Great Lakes were 90 percent covered by ice in mid-February. The record is 95 percent, which took place in 1979.
