Twenty-four years before Reagan threw down the gauntlet to the Soviet leader, President Kennedy expressed support for Germans on June 26, 1963, when he declared to tens of thousands near the Brandenburg Gate: ‘All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words “Ich bin ein Berliner!” ’
