Grenade-launched tear gas drives West Berlin youths away as they protest the wall’s first anniversary. They are carrying a black cross proclaiming, ‘We accuse.’ West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt strongly criticized the United States for not trying to block construction of the barrier, which eventually included a so-called ‘death strip’ between barbed-wire barricades and the wall.
