An East German border guard stands vigil as a passerby chips at a remnant of the wall near the former Checkpoint Charlie. In the early days after the wall’s demise, guards tried to discourage the so-called ‘wall-peckers.’ They eventually abandoned such efforts, and this obviously relaxed guard pays little heed to the crowbar-wielding man.
