East Berliners run into West Berlin through a new opening in the wall near the Brandenburg Gate. The new government had fulfilled its promise to open the gate completely by Christmas. Although East Berliners had traveled relatively unfettered since Nov. 9, Dec. 23 was the first day West Berliners could move between the cities without visas.
