33 States Have Enacted Voter ID Requirements

Thirty-three states now require voters to present some form of identification before casting a vote. That’s up from 26 states in 2010 and 14 in 2000.

Among states requiring voters to provide identification, 18 require photo IDs while 15 accept some other proof of identity. The number of states requiring photo IDs grew from four in 2000 to eight in 2010 to 17 today.

The increase in voter identification laws has taken place as Republicans have gained more control of state governments. Republicans now have a governing trifecta in 25 states, up from eight in 2010. A trifecta is when one political party controls a state's governorship and both houses of the state legislature.
