White House press aide Michael Short abruptly resigned Tuesday, ending speculation over whether he'd be fired by his new boss, Anthony Scaramucci, The Hill reports.
"I have resigned, effective immediately," Short said in a text message. "It was a privilege to serve the President of the United States."
Scaramucci, President Donald Trump's new communications director, threatened to "fire everybody" on Tuesday, telling Politico that he would start with Short in the morning.
"I'm going to fire everybody, that's how I'm going to do it," Scaramucci told reporters Tuesday. "You're either going to stop leaking or you're going to be fired."
Short told CNN shortly afterwards that "No one has told me anything and the entire premise is false."
He later sent a text message to several reporters simply saying "I have resigned."
Scaramucci added to reporters this morning that he was "upset" that the media learned of Short's imminent termination before he did.
"This is the problem with the leaking," he said. "This is actually a terrible thing. Let's say I'm firing Michael Short today. The fact that you guys know about it before he does really upsets me as a human being and as a Roman Catholic."
He continued, "I should have the opportunity, if I have to let somebody go, to let the person go in a very humane, dignified way, and then the next thing ... is help the person get a job somewhere, OK, because he probably has a family, right? So now you guys are talking about it, it's not fair. ... Here's the problem with the leaking, why I have to figure out a way to get the leaking to stop, because it hurts people."
