Rush: Trump 'Outfoxed' on Soldier's Parents Because He Doesn't See Liberalism

Donald Trump was "outfoxed" by Democrats when he responded to an attack on him by the parents of a Muslim American soldier killed in Iraq – and that's because he doesn't see liberalism, conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh says.

Calling the dustup between the GOP presidential nominee and Khizr Khan, the father of Army Capt. Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khanl, "avoidable," Limbaugh said on his radio show Monday that most analysts are wrong who say Trump stepped in it criticizing Gold Star parents because he's a political amateur as opposed to his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

"If Trump does not start seeing things through an ideological prism, he will never understand the method, the motive and the how and why these attacks against him happen," Limbaugh said. "He doesn't see liberalism, and because he doesn't see liberalism, he can be outfoxed by it every day."

Trump, Limbaugh said, is not an ideological person.

"Trump will see Hillary Clinton or [New York Sen.] Chuck Schumer, and he won't think liberal, he won't think progressive, he won't think statist. He'll think other things about them, whatever his personal opinions of them are."

Trump needs someone who he will listen to who does see things ideologically, Limbaugh said, because Trump missed the real point of the strategic move by Clinton and the Democrat Party in putting Khan and his wife, Ghazala, onstage at last week's Democratic Convention.

Khizr Khan slammed Trump for his call for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration while Ghazala stood beside him. Trump complained on Twitter he had been "viciously attacked" by the father and questioned on ABC's "This Week" why the mother had not spoken, suggesting it might have been because, as a Muslim woman, she wasn't allowed to speak.

Ghazala Khan fired back, appearing on television and in print, saying she couldn't talk because she was too upset to do so while looking at a photograph of her son that was being shown on a giant screen behind her.

Trump "misread" the situation, Limbaugh said. "He saw something that was irrelevant and he decided to make a comment about it because he thought it dovetailed with his message on Islam and the lack of freedom and integrity and human rights that women in Islam have, so he goes after the mother on the stage wearing the hijab not saying anything."

Neither of the parents are the target, Limbaugh said. "Hillary Clinton is always the target. The Democrat Party should always be, and Hillary Clinton should always be the target, not this guy."

Limbaugh compared the Khans to Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq who was a frequent critic of President George W. Bush.

"It's clear that he and his wife were put on that stage as props, disguised as the Democrats being thoughtful and compassionate and understanding," Limbaugh said.

Trump's criticism of the Khans has drawn blowback from Democrats and other Republicans alike.
