The nation's largest organization of combat veterans — and the oldest major veterans group — slammed Donald Trump on Monday for his "out of bounds" attack on the military Gold Star family of fallen hero, Army Capt. Humayun Khan.
"Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression," Brian Duffy, leader of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said in a statement Monday
"There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can repair once crossed. Giving one's life to nation is the greatest sacrifice, followed closely by all Gold Star families, who have a right to make their voices heard."
In its news release, the 1.7 million-member organization said Trump "has a history of lashing out after being attacked, but to ridicule a Gold Star Mother is out-of-bounds."
Trump has run into bipartisan blow back
for his war of words with Khan's parents for speaking out against him.
Both Trump and Hillary Clinton spoke at the organization's convention last week in North Carolina, Politico notes
. During Trump's speech, some in the crowd chanted "Lock her up,"
mimicking the response from GOP convention attendees.
