The United States' rule of law is crucial, but at the same time, Sen. Ron Johnson said Thursday he hopes due process doesn't drag the legal proceedings against New York City terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov on for years.
"It sounds like he waived his Miranda rights and is singing like a canary," the Wisconsin Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.
"I hope it continues because we need to find out if there's different connections."
Johnson said what he wants to see, and what other people will want to see, is that Saipov meets with swift justice.
"Our standard is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt," said Johnson. "Our standard is innocent until proven guilty. There's no doubt whatsoever. I hope the justice system gives him his due process."
Meanwhile, Johnson said he agrees that the diversity visa lottery program, which helped bring the Uzbek terrorist to the United States, has not been good, and he favors a merit-based system.
"We allow millions into the country, and only 14 percent have anything to do with work," said Johnson. "Sixty-five percent are family related; 22 percent are refugees, and it doesn't make sense. We need a merit-based system and millions want to come to this land of opportunity. It should be based on merit in terms of what can you add to this great country."
