Republican presidential candidate John Kasich took shots at rival Ted Cruz on Friday, saying that that the Texas senator's actions on Capitol Hill proved that "he has no record."

"The problem with Senator Cruz is he has no record," Kasich said on the campaign trail in Hershey, Pa., CNN reports. "His record is shutting down the government and making everybody he works with upset.

"Now, maybe he ought to talk about what he's for going forward — because what he's been for in the past hasn't worked."

Kasich comments marked a departure from his longtime position of wanting to remain above the fray during the contest for the Republican nomination, coming a day after a super PAC supporting the Ohio governor released a political ad using front-runner Donald Trump's negative moniker for Cruz: "Lyin' Ted."

He told CNN later on Friday that while he did not like the ad from the PAC, New Day for America, he would not allow Cruz to bash him without responding.

"I have a right to stick up for what I believe in," Kasich said. "But that's a direction I don't want to go."

Under federal law, Kasich is not allowed to coordinate with or contribute to New Day.

John Weaver, the governor's campaign manager, also posted this on Twitter:

The Cruz campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment to Kasich's remarks, CNN reports.
