Donald Trump is trying to boomerang the negative remarks that've been made against him, calling Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton "pretty close to unhinged" – and lacking the temperament to lead the country.
At a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday, the GOP nominee also reiterated his position that some NATO allies don't pay their fair share of defense and that the United States has to be "prepared to walk away."
Trump's anti-Clinton comments mirrored those aimed at him by Clinton supporters, the Ames Tribune reports.
"She’s really pretty close to unhinged," Trump said, the newspaper reports. "She’s like an unbalanced person."
"I always thought I was extremely fit," he added. "In fact, all of my life I’ve been told, you have the greatest temperament."
Trump also said the United States has to rethink its alliance with nations who don't pay their share of defense cots, Politico reports.
"You know, Hillary Clinton came out and said, 'That’s terrible. He’s not going to stick with our allies.' We’re going to stick, but once the ally hears her dumb talk, because it’s dumb, why would they ever pay?"
"Let’s say somebody like Hillary Clinton makes this statement, 'We will never abandon our allies.' I think those statements are beautiful. I think they’re great. One problem: When you go in and say, 'We will never ever abandon you, but you have to pay us more money,' they’re going to say, 'We’re not going to pay you more money if you’re not going to abandon us.'
"You always have to be prepared to walk," he declared. "I don’t think we’d walk. I don’t think it’s going to be necessary. It could be, though."
