An email from the Donald Trump campaign asking supporters to try to become delegates in Washington went out two days after a crucial deadline.
According to
Politico, which obtained a copy of the email, the message went out Friday and said supporters can sign up to be potential delegates on Saturday with the stipulation that they declared their candidacy by the Wednesday deadline.
"You can still be elected as a Trump Delegate at your GOP County Convention this Saturday!" the email reportedly reads. "If you have submitted a Declaration of Candidacy for Delegate form to your GOP County Chairman by the assigned deadline of 10:00am on April 6th."
Washington state Republican Party executive director Caleb Heimlich told Politico, "It is too late to be on the printed ballot for the ones this Saturday."
Trump adviser
Paul Manafort was promoted to lead the campaign's delegate operations and strategy this week. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's campaign has been working behind the scenes to secure delegate votes ahead of this summer's convention that will decide the nominee.
Another Politico report last week claimed delegates are preparing to abandon Trump at the convention if he falls short of the 1,237 delegate total in the primaries that would guarantee him the nomination.
