Senate Democrats: We Won't Recess Till Supreme Court Stalling Stops

Democrats are unveiling a new tactic to get the Republican-controlled Senate to stop dragging its feet on Merrick Garland's nomination to the Supreme Court.

They won't recess until the stalling stops.

Rep. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, a Connecticut Democrat will introduce on Wednesday the "Senate's Court Obligations Trump Unconstitutional Stalling," or SCOTUS, The Washington Post reports.

The resolution would force Congress to remain in session over the summer recess if the Senate has not held hearings on Garland by July 19.

"We already have one dysfunctional branch of government right now, and I'm not going to sit idly by and watch the Senate try to create a second dysfunctional branch by hobbling the Supreme Court," Esty told The Post.

When President Barack Obama nominated Garland in March following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Republicans said they would not hold hearings on any nominee because, with the election so soon, it should be the next president that chooses a justice.
