Rep. Luna: My Military Records Likely Leaked by USAF to Dem Firm

By    |   Monday, 27 February 2023 10:40 PM EST

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., speculated Monday that her private military records might have been leaked to a Democratic opposition research firm by the U.S. Air Force.

If true, Luna would become the latest Republican to fall victim to this apparent breach of security, adding fuel to the ongoing scandal plaguing the Department of Defense, Fox News reported.

"The USAF," Luna tweeted Monday, "leaked information of USAF candidates in the 2022 midterms to a DEMOCRAT OPPO research firm."

To date, nearly a dozen Republican lawmakers and former candidates have come forward claiming that their private military information was released, without authorization, by the U.S. Air Force.

The leaked information appears to have been requested and obtained by a Democratic opposition research firm that received funds from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) — the campaign arm for House Democrats.

The incident has also raised concerns about the security of sensitive information within the U.S. military and has prompted calls for greater transparency and accountability.

But at this stage, it remains unclear how the Democratic research firm obtained access to the documents.

In her Monday interview with Fox News, Luna said, "this is probably not the first time that this opposition research firm has done this."

"Obviously, being a service member, I think that, regardless of political affiliation, they need to be held accountable, and they can't give our private information, whether it's health or service records, to anyone without our consent," Luna continued.

"In my opinion," added Luna, "it's unacceptable, and it's BS that they didn't get back to us sooner."

Luna suggested the leaked military information could result in a criminal inquiry.

Also, Luna recounts that on Feb. 6, a news outlet reached out to her former supervisor inquiring about her time in the military, and if she had ties to Russia.

Luna says the unnamed news outlet claimed to have gained access to her military records, via her supervisor. However, the Florida Republican notes it would be impossible for the media company to know her supervisor, without foreknowledge of her military records.

Additionally, Luna said she also reached out to former Republican congressional candidate J.R. Majewski, whose military records were leaked, to inquire if he had been notified by the Air Force.

Majewski, according to Luna, said he had not been notified.

Luna said she sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Feb. 13, seeking answers concerning the leaked information.

However, the Air Force missed its Feb. 27 deadline to respond and instead insisted it would respond by March 17.
