Former President Barack Obama will headline a Democratic National Committee fundraiser on Sept. 27 — the first time he's appealed to donors for the party since leaving office, CNN reported.

The fundraiser in Washington will help Obama's former labor secretary, DNC head Tom Perez, build up the party's coffers and pump dollars into state parties.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, each state will get $10,000 through 2018 from the DNC. In addition, the DNC will also spend $1.5 million on Virginia's statewide and local races this year.

Invitations to donors went out Friday afternoon, CNN reported.

Federal Election Commission figures show DNC's fundraising collected only $3.8 million in July, the worst month since January 2009, the month Obama took office, CNN reported.

The DNC ended July with $6.8 million cash on hand and $3.4 million in debt.

The Republican National Committee raised $7.8 million in July. It has $47.1 million cash on hand and no debt.
