Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have asked former Attorney General Loretta Lynch for information regarding the FBI's Hillary Clinton email investigation and whether there was any political interference involved in the matter.
Four lawmakers — committee chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., along with the Crime and Terrorism Subcommittee chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and ranking Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. — requested information from Lynch and three others.
During testimony on Capitol Hill in early June, former FBI Director James Comey suggested there may have been forces inside the government trying to squash the FBI's probe into Clinton's use of a private email setup while she served as secretary of state.
That testimony occurred during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing. The Judiciary Committee is now interested in probing the allegations.
The committee also sent letters to Leonard Benardo and Gail Scovell of the Open Society Foundations, a George Soros group, and Clinton campaign staffer Amanda Renteria.
"The reports come amidst numerous allegations of political inference in controversial and high-profile investigations spanning the current and previous administrations," the committee said in a statement.
"The Senate Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over the FBI and Justice Department and is obliged to oversee any potential misconduct or inappropriate political influence at these agencies."
