As I flipped through the channels days ago, a gray and grimy image stopped me.
It was the movie “Nineteen Eighty-Four,” the British film made that year based on George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. It stars John Hurt as Winston Smith and Richard Burton in his last role as grand inquisitor O'Brien.
What caught my attention was a crowd of people screaming invectives at those found guilty of the treason of thought crime in one of Big Brother's show trials.
This “Daily Hate” was one of the collectivist rituals of Ingsoc, Orwell's Newspeak name for the English Socialist totalitarian state he depicted.
This movie was airing only days after ruling Democratic Party congressmen had savaged AIG employees receiving bonuses with televised demands that they give the government their perfectly legal contracted payments.
Committee Chairman Barney Frank ordered the head of AIG to give him the names and home addresses of bonus recipients, then refused to promise not to make these addresses public after being given descriptions of horrifying death threats against them and their children.
Soon thereafter, the radical left group ACORN, which once employed community organizer Barack Obama, bankrolled a journalist bus tour to visit and photograph protests in front of the Connecticut homes of AIG executives.
This tour, as one reporter noted, had three times more journalists than actual protesters, but it got lavish coverage from The New York Times and other left-liberal media. By contrast, a Manhattan rally of 6,000 anti-tax protesters received no coverage at all.
Welcome to Amsoc, the new American Socialist order in which government demonizes those it wants destroyed, and the press is merely the megaphone of Big Brother, dutifully slanting its coverage and rewriting history to advance the ruling party agenda.
The breathtaking power grab of that agenda is becoming clear, despite the smoke and mirrors that have been used to conceal it. While the secretary of the Treasury expropriates one company after another and demands that he be given unfettered power to do so, President Obama in effect fired the head of General Motors.
Such powers reach light years beyond Article I Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, written by our nation's founders to limit tightly what the government may do legally.
“Bind them down with the chains of the Constitution,” warned Thomas Jefferson, who understood the lust of those in government to accumulate more and more power for themselves.
Those chains have now burst asunder, unleashing monsters long bent on turning capitalist America into an authoritarian country at least as ideologically leftward as Europe's socialist welfare states.
In London this week, President Obama agreed, as veteran political insider Dick Morris predicted, to make America's Federal Reserve Board and Securities and Exchange Commission subservient to the European-controlled International Monetary Fund.
More than two centuries of American independence and sovereignty have just been flushed away while President Obama enjoyed a photo op with the puppet president of Russia.
Dmitry Medvedev hailed Obama as “my new comrade,” even as Russia moved in the United Nations to hamper U.S. restraints against North Korea's missile test and Iranian nuclear weapon ambitions.
At the G-20 meeting, Russia also joined China in pressing for a new global currency to replace the U.S. dollar. Russia's preference is for a basket of currencies and more as well as gold to sink the dollar.
In some ways, Russia seems more capitalist than we do. Its taxes on business are far lower than ours, the second heaviest of any nation.
And now Russia is promoting a gold standard, one effect of which would be to deter governments eager to “monetize” their debt by printing trillions of dollars, which would greatly devalue every dollar in American pockets and mattresses.
Russia's self-interest is clear as the second-largest gold producer in the world. The more trillions of fiat dollars the Obama administration prints, using inflation as de facto taxation of America's savings, the more valuable are Russia's reserves of gold, a counter-cyclical precious metal that rises in value when currencies and stocks are falling.
But what is President Obama's aim? The fear among some experts is that he is not a compromising politician but a committed leftwing ideologue. Some fear that he is willing to sacrifice his re-election if unpopularity is the price of using the present crisis and ruling Democratic congressional majority to replace capitalism with socialism as rapidly and permanently as possible.
After more than 75 years of hectoring and hobbling capitalist corporations with onerous regulations, imposed unions, and high taxes to make them too weak to survive, the Democratic Party's loony left wing has gained political power and is rushing to shove capitalism off the cliff where it now totters.
Companies are being expropriated as if this were a Central American banana republic after a Marxist coup, and the president demands carte blanche to seize companies that took no government money, based solely on his judgment whether a company could influence the economic health of the country.
While planning to gag conservative talk radio, the president also is tripling the size of Americorps to 250,000 paid “volunteers” will. Obama administration literature says openly that the aim is to create a “cadre” of trained “community organizers” and political shock troops to promote Obama's agenda.
The president now plans to have the radical group ACORN play a major role in the 2010 Census. Census data is used to determine which places gain or lose seats in Congress, as well as where and to whom federal largesse gets distributed. ACORN could influence Census results easily, tilting the data in favor of doling out more power and pork to Democrat-run states.
As in Orwell's novel “1984,” Obama uses Orwellian Newspeak and Double Think. The political dictionary has been rewritten to delete the word terrorist. The war on terror has been renamed Overseas Contingency Operations. And Guantanamo enemy combatants now have no euphemistic tag whatsoever; they have become Big Brother's nonpersons.
