A suburban Washington, D.C., private golf club plans to offer former President Barack Obama an invitation to join despite objections from some of its members who disagreed with Obama's policies toward Israel.
Woodmont Country Club, according to The Hill, has a high number of Jewish members. Some of them complained about the United States' decision to abstain from voting on a U.N. Security Council measure that condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
In a letter to members Monday, club president Barry Forman explained his reasoning for allowing Obama to join — if he chooses to.
"Political views have never been part of our membership criteria and our members have always reflected a range of opinions on issues of the day," Forman wrote, according to The Hill. "In the current deeply polarized political environment, it is all the more important that Woodmont be a place where people of varying views and beliefs can enjoy fellowship and recreation in a relaxed environment.
"It is in this spirit that I am pleased to report that the Executive Committee has overwhelmingly authorized a communication to Mr. and Mrs. Obama that we would welcome their application to Woodmont under our 'Special Membership' category."
The "special membership" status means the Obamas would have to pay club dues but a one-time joining fee would be waived.
The Obamas are currently on vacation in California but will live in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, located just a few blocks from the White House.
