The White House coronavirus task force will address the media on Friday for the first time in nearly two months, as the virus has begun to flare up in several states, according to The Hill.
Vice President Mike Pence will lead the press conference from the Department of Health and Human Services.
The last task force briefing was on April 27.
The number of positive coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths fell drastically in April and May, but recently began to spike again in at least seven states, including Arizona, California, Florida, North Carolina and Texas.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, on Thursday halted the reopening of the state and stopped all elective surgeries in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, but has stopped short of requiring masks to be worn in public.
On Wednesday, 45,557 coronavirus cases were diagnosed in the United States, making it the highest total since the pandemic hit the country. So far, 2,374,282 people have been infected with COVID-19 in America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
President Donald Trump on Saturday at his rally in Tulsa called for coronavirus testing to slow down. He echoed a similar sentiment while visiting a Wisconsin shipbuilder Thursday.
"If we didn’t want to test, or if we didn’t test, we wouldn’t have cases," Trump said. "But we have cases because we test. Deaths are down. We have one of the lowest mortality rates. We’ve done an incredible, historic job.”
