Wasserman Schultz, CNN’s Cooper Squabble on Air

By    |   Friday, 24 August 2012 01:36 PM EDT

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and CNN commentator Anderson Cooper got into it live on TV Thursday night.

Cooper assailed the Florida representative for misquoting the Los Angeles Times in a fundraising e-mail. That letter also incorrectly stated Mitt Romney’s position concerning the Republican Party platform’s stance on abortion, he said, according to Politico.

The L.A. Times quote was used “completely out of context,” said Cooper, brandishing a copy of the e-mail.

“The DNC chairwoman calls out Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for saying they don’t entirely agree with that plank [denying abortion under any circumstances],” Cooper said. “And here’s how she backs it up [in the e-mail]: ‘Guess what? The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the platform was, and I quote, ‘written at the direction of Romney’s campaign.’”

But that quote “was ripped out of a sentence,” he said. The complete quote was: “Delegates for presumptive nominee Mitt Romney are voting down substantive changes to the platform language that was written at the direction of Romney’s campaign.”

The changes would have allowed abortion for instances such as rape.

“Do you at least acknowledge that the quote that you gave from The L.A. Times is completely incorrect?” Cooper asked.

“No, I don’t acknowledge that. I know that is what you’re saying,” Wasserman Schultz responded. “Anderson, what I’m saying is, it doesn’t matter.”

Cooper’s reply: “I think what you say does matter. You’re quoting the L.A. Times, and you’ve misquoted them to back up a position.”
