Government leaders should take some lessons from how they're handling the coronavirus crisis and apply them to the fight against climate change, a new editorial reads.

The Los Angeles Times editorial board published a piece Monday morning that argued for climate change to be taken more seriously and properly addressed.

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis is "not the only crisis the world is facing, and we ought not, while confronting the immediate menace, disregard the other immense threat looming over us: global warming. Rather, somewhat counterintuitively, we should use the current pandemic to learn some lessons and glean some insights about the other perils we will soon be facing," the story reads.

"We're not suggesting that climate change contributed to the coronavirus outbreak … But the global response to this pandemic does show that the world can come together to confront a shared threat. That could bode well for addressing climate change — if we treat it as seriously."

The story noted that factories worldwide have temporarily closed and people are not driving nearly as much during lockdowns and because of directives from state, local, and federal governments for people to stay at home as much as possible, which has resulted in lower greenhouse gas emissions. And although things will eventually go back to how they were before the virus crisis, companies can take some lessons from it, the editorial board concluded.

"Businesses are learning how much of their workforce can do their jobs remotely, which offers guidance for how they might operate in the future with a lighter carbon footprint," the story reads. "Consumers are undergoing a forced experiment in changed patterns of shopping and consumption.

"Congress and President [Donald] Trump also are negotiating a series of bailouts and other support packages to help people and businesses survive. They should take this opportunity to press for changes in how some of these industries operate."

The story adds that the government should forgo giving bailout money to the oil and gas industry and should instead contribute to the renewable energy industry.
