Coronavirus Kills 4th Member of One New Jersey Family

The COVID-19 virus tore through a New Jersey family in recent days, infecting seven people and killing three — including the 73-year-old matriarch who had 11 children and 27 grandchildren.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that Grace Fusco died Wednesday night after a brief battle with the coronavirus. She was so ill that she was unaware that two of her children — Rita Fusco-Jackson of Freehold, New Jersey; and Carmine Fusco of Bath, Pennsylvania — also had died from the virus.

According to a report on Thursday by nj.com, a fourth relative, Vincent Fusco, died at a hospital in Freehold.

His mom Grace spent Wednesday on a ventilator at the same hospital, CentraState Medical Center, before she died. Her son Carmine died hours before she did, while her daughter passed away on March 13.

Almost 20 members of the family remain quarantined at home.

The Times reported that a person who had contact with someone who died March 10 of the coronavirus attended a Fusco family gathering, which authorities said is how the virus was passed to the family. What's perplexing is the high rate of death.

"I don't know if it's a strain thing," Dr. James Matera, chief medical officer of CentraState Medical Center, told the Times. "I would consider these particular people to be unusual."
