Virginia Gov. McAuliffe Thrown by Horse, Hospitalized

Monday, 19 January 2015 04:22 PM EST

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe was hospitalized on Monday and will undergo a medical procedure after being thrown from a horse while vacationing in Africa, his office said.

McAuliffe, 57, broke seven ribs in the riding accident which took place during a holiday trip with his family to Africa, his office said in a statement.

The injury did not stop him from doing his job and the Democratic governor was expected to heal on his own, his office said.

But upon further examination, doctors on Monday found fluid around McAuliffe's lungs that required hospitalization for removal, his office said. It did not say what caused the fluid.

"He is being admitted today and is expected to be back in action after 2-3 days of recovery," the governor's office said.
