Battered by Irene, Vermont Warned of More Flooding

Sunday, 04 September 2011 11:13 AM EDT

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Still cleaning up after extensive flooding from tropical storm Irene cut off towns across Vermont, residents are being warned of another round of possible floods.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch through Tuesday morning across the state.

The weather service the areas hard hit by Irene will be susceptible to flash floods. Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected with localized amounts of up to 4 inches starting Sunday afternoon.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says Vermonters should monitor the forecast; stock up on water, nonperishable food and other supplies; and prepare for power outages.

He says residents should use text messaging to communicate during a storm if possible rather than cellphones because texts use less bandwidth and are therefore more likely to get through.
