President Donald Trump’s vow that a coronavirus vaccine would be publicly available by Election Day failed to come true, as none of the leading candidates to produce a vaccine have even applied for approval to release one.
The World Health Organization noted in a report issued Tuesday that none of the vaccine candidates have progressed past the clinical evaluation stages, meaning they remain far from seeking approval.
Last Friday, White House director of strategic communications Alyssa Farah downplayed Trump’s repeated promises to get a vaccine released by Election Day, calling it “kind of an arbitrary deadline,” and saying that the administration is “highly confident” a vaccine will be available “by the end of the year.”
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said last month that "Pending FDA [Food and Drug Administration] authorizations, we believe we may have up to 100 million doses by the end of the year — enough to cover especially vulnerable populations — and we project having enough for every American who wants a vaccine by March to April 2021."
