The U.S. Navy is set to commission its newest destroyer with the name of a lieutenant from New York who became the first American awarded the Medal of Honor in Afghanistan.
A ceremony is scheduled for Saturday in New York City to commission the USS Michael Murphy.
The 29-year-old Long Island native was killed in 2005 along with two fellow SEALs during an ambush. Murphy is credited with exposing himself to enemy fire to call in a request for assistance.
Sixteen of his rescuers also died when their helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade. The only SEAL to survive has since written a book about the battle.
A movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Taylor Kitsch is being made about the firefight.
