NEW YORK — New York City has recovered and moved forward from Sept. 11 in many ways. But for some people who lived through the attacks, the only way to do that was by leaving the city behind.
Among the estimated 1.6 million people who left the state in the last decade are former New Yorkers who hoped a new setting would give them the breathing room to cope with what they'd been through.
They're people like Karen Cooney. She left Staten Island and now lives in Upper Southampton, Pa. She says the atmosphere in the city after Sept. 11 was too much for her to take.
Psychologist J. William Worden says making a change like moving can help people feel like they're in control.
