Lawyer: Client Who Viewed Obama Records Was Bored

Friday, 25 June 2010 04:40 PM EDT

The attorney for a man who has pleaded guilty to looking at President Barack Obama's student loan records says his client only found the records because he and others were bored at work.

John Phommivong (FAHM'-ah-vong) pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Davenport. He and eight other former employees of Vangent Inc. were charged with illegally accessing Obama's student loan records while they were employed at the U.S. Department of Education contractor in Coralville.

Phomminvong's attorney, David Treimer, says his client and others looked up student loan records during down time at work. He says there was no malicious intent and that Phommivong also looked up records of celebrities.
