Menendez Lawyer Files to Have Corruption Case Moved to DC

Monday, 11 May 2015 08:45 PM EDT

Indicted Sen. Bob Menendez has asked to have his federal corruption case moved from New Jersey to Washington, D.C.

Attorneys for Menendez and co-defendant Salomon Melgen filed the request in Newark on Monday.

Menendez is charged with accepting gifts and donations totaling about $1 million from Melgen, a Florida ophthalmologist, in exchange for political favors.

The motion argues that the Democrat from New Jersey isn't charged with any acts that took place in the state.

Both men were charged in a 22-count indictment last month. Melgen faces separate Medicare fraud charges in Florida.
