Tulsa County Undersheriff Resigns after Memo, Fatal Shooting

Monday, 27 April 2015 01:38 PM EDT

A Tulsa County Sheriff's Office senior official has resigned following a memo indicating the agency gave special treatment to a volunteer deputy who later fatally shot a restrained man, and that the official repeatedly rebuffed criticism of that reservist.

Sheriff Stanley Glanz said in a release Monday that Undersheriff Tim Albin has submitted his resignation.

Glanz didn't specify why Albin stepped down, but said departmental reorganization was necessary following the shooting by reserve deputy Robert Bates this month.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment from Albin on Monday.

Albin, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was named in a 2009 internal investigation released last week that showed deputies had expressed concerns about Bates' performance. Some claimed Albin gave Bates preferential treatment and intimidated those who raised concerns.
