Some residents of a Des Moines neighborhood that flooded twice when a levee failed are packing up because they fear they could be flooded again.
Irene Carter hauled belongings out of her home in the Birdland neighborhood on Tuesday. She says her house was flooded in 1993 and again in 2008 when the levee failed along the Des Moines River.
Carter says she's heading to higher ground because she doesn't trust the levee.
The Des Moines River was already swollen with snowmelt when rain began to fall in June. Saylorville Lake, north of Des Moines, is designed to protect the city from flooding, but it is close to its maximum storage and is forecast to overtop a spillway on Wednesday.
