Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he's sorry he suggested he'd put a rifle up the butt of a reporter who'd asked him about the effectiveness of the city's handgun ban.
Daley said Friday while he regrets his exact words, he hopes his comments will get people thinking about the dangers of guns.
The city's 1982 handgun ban has been the subject of legal challenges for years and in March the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments about the ban. It has yet to issue a ruling.
Daley is a staunch supporter of the ban and his comments came after the reporter wondered about how well it had worked. He made the comment Thursday as he picked up a gun that was seized by police.
Daley chuckled while saying: "If I put this up your butt, you'll find out how effective it is."
