Opening Statements Expected in Chandra Levy Trial

Monday, 25 October 2010 07:04 AM EDT

WASHINGTON — More than nine years after her disappearance became a mystery that garnered national attention, opening statements are scheduled to begin in the murder trial of the man accused of killing Washington intern Chandra Levy.

Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, is charged with the attempted sexual assault and murder of Levy back in 2001. Levy's disappearance made headlines when she was romantically linked to then- California Rep. Gary Condit. But police no longer believe Condit had anything to do with Levy's death.

A jury of 12 women and four men, which includes four alternates, was selected last week. The trial is expected to last at least a month.

Condit has said through a spokesman that he expects to testify.
