Lawyers for thousands of Sept. 11 responders are back in a New York City court for a hearing on a deal that would pay from a few thousand dollars to $1.8 million to people exposed to toxic World Trade Center dust.
Lawyers presented payout estimates before Wednesday's hearing on the tentative settlement.
U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein endorsed the deal earlier this month and was to hear more testimony Wednesday.
The deal would pay $625 million to $712.5 million, depending on how many people take it.
Lawyers say those with the least serious ailments could get $3,250. People with illnesses like laryngitis or sleep apnea could get $12,000. Up to $1.8 million would go to the estates of plaintiffs who died from dust-related illnesses.
