SHERWOOD, Ark. (AP) — More than 300 people gathered in Arkansas to pay their last respects to a Vietnam veteran most of them never even met.
Members of the honor guard scrambled to find people to stand by for Friday's burial of Leroy Earl Brumbaugh. They had heard he was homeless and feared no one would show up, so they spent the past week asking veterans groups to help spread the word.
Veterans, active members of the military and even a patriotic group of motorcycle riders showed up for the 74-year-old's funeral.
As it turned out Brumbaugh wasn't homeless and had family in south Arkansas, who contacted the funeral home this week. An ex-wife and a handful of his family members joined the crowd at the funeral.
