Democrats will prevail against GOP candidates in several hotly contested races across the country in the midterm elections, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumpka told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Volunteers had been working hard In Wisconsin's tight race for governor, Trumpka said, and predicted victory for Democrat Mary Burke against incumbent Gov. Scott Walker.

"It's not been tough for us to get volunteers in Wisconsin because this guy is not only just an anti-worker governor in Wisconsin, he's sort of like the poster child for that across the country," Trumpka said Tuesday. "We're getting a great response. And, I think, ultimately, all of these races, by the way are close, but I think we win that one."

Unions were dealt a severe blow in Wisconsin after a law was passed in 2011 that essentially ended collective bargaining in the state. Walker successfully beat back a recall attempt in 2012 by opponents angry over the law, and membership has dropped from the state's teachers' union since the law was passed.

The AFL-CIO had been focusing on gubernatorial and Senate races in "about 13 states, 14 states," Trumpka said. The labor union was also targeting races at the state level, he said, because of "the mess in [Washington] D.C., where you can't get anything done, because of [Sen. Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell's obstruction style of politics."

In Michigan's race for governor, Trumpka said the Democrats' ground game was "really picking up," and predicted the Democratic candidate, former Rep. Mark Schauer, would win against Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

He said he was "optimistic" that Democrat Charlie Crist, who was a Florida Republican governor before changing parties, would win against incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Scott in the state's governor's race.

"I think we end up winning, because, I think, it's a, you know, Crist is a good candidate. He works hard, and he's been good for workers," he said.

Trumpka explained the Democrats' ground game and voter turnout would be what were "going to make the difference" on election day.
