Trump Eyes Buying Mets, Kluge Winery

Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:13 PM EST

Donald Trump hasn’t let his presidential aspirations slow down his acquisitive side. The Donald is looking at buying the New York Mets and the palatial Virginia estate and winery of socialite Patricia Kluge.

Trump has been in contact with Mets’ principal owner Fred Wilpon, who is looking for investors in the team since he and the other owners became ensnarled in a $1 billion lawsuit over dealings with convicted Ponzi scheme mastermind Bernard Madoff. Trump said that the Wilpons are friends and if they can’t get a minority investor he was interested in the team, The New York Times reported.

A Trump adviser said the real estate mogul was looking to buy Kluge's grand estate, Albemarle House, and all of her former real estate holdings outside Charlottesville, which includes a 900-acre vineyard.

The acquisition would put Trump a veritable stone’s throw away from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, The Washington Post said.

Due to financial reversals, the properties are in foreclosure. Kluge’s creditor, Bank of America, took ownership of the house on Wednesday but Trump hold a right of first refusal to buy it.

In 2009, Trump purchased a 600-acre golf club along the Potomac River in Virginia and renamed it Trump National Golf Club, the Post said.
