The U.S. Capitol Police are reportedly investigating threats made against Rep. Trey Gowdy, the South Carolina Republican leading a new probe of the Benghazi terrorist attacks.

According to Politico, Public Information Officer Shennell Antrobus has confirmed that there is "an active, open investigation."

Gowdy faced "harm" if his leadership of a panel probing the slayings of the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans continues, the email threats warn, Politco reports.

Politico said its reporters and writers at other news organizations received two email threats against Gowdy Tuesday. It is unclear whether Gowdy has also personally received  additional threats.
