A former member of SEAL Team 6, the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden, has written a book revealing his transformation from serving in the special operations forces to living life as a lady.
Kristin Beck, formerly Chris Beck, who deployed 13 times and earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, realized after she left the service that she was not living the life she wanted.
"Chris really wanted to be a girl and felt that she was a girl and consolidated that identity very early on in childhood," Anne Speckhard, co-author of Beck's biography, "Warrior Princess," which was published over the weekend, told
ABC News.
Beck reportedly came out to friends and colleagues shortly after her retirement, and writes in the book about her personal and professional experiences.
Brandon Webb of SOFREP, a blog covering the special operations community, said that he knew about Beck but did not divulge the story.
"I first met Chris when she was at SEAL Team One," wrote Webb. "While Chris was always a little different, I had no idea what was lying under the surface, as I'm sure a lot of people will have the same experience."
While the Defense Department has removed the ban on gays and lesbians serving in the military, transgender men and women are still banned from signing up to serve.
