Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., said that God could solve the problem of climate change, if it exists, according to HuffPost.
"I believe there's climate change. I believe there's been climate change since the beginning of time. I think there are cycles. Do I think man has some impact? Yeah, of course. Can man change the entire universe? No," Walberg said at a town hall meeting in Coldwater, Mich.
"Why do I believe that? Well, as a Christian, I believe that there is a creator in God who is much bigger than us. And I'm confident that, if there's a real problem, he can take care of it."
Walberg said, however, that he believes in taking care of the environment.
"I majored in forestry and land management. I'm not taking a back seat to anybody on stewardship of God's created resources. Not at all."
"We've got to be its stewards. He gave us a treasure," Walberg said.
A report by NASA pointed out that 97 percent or more of active climate scientists believe that Earth's climate getting warmer is "extremely likely due to human activities."
MSNBC writer Steve Benen criticized Walberg's statement in a Thursday MSNBC post.
"By his reasoning, combating an environmental crisis is unnecessary because supernatural forces will solve the problem that Republican officials prefer to ignore . . . the scope of the implications is staggering. We could stop investing in national defense, confident that an all-powerful God would create peace," Benen wrote.
