The White House sets the tone for Washington, D.C., and the U.S., so it is weighing an unprecedented move to teleworking for its staff, Politico reported.

"I don't ever remember the World Health Organization declaring a pandemic and that's extremely significant," a former White House staffer told Politico. "That's something we haven't faced yet, especially with regards to how long this thing could last: One month? Two months? Is it going to subside and come back?"

Many technology companies already have advised teleworking, mostly because they are set up with the infrastructure to work that way.

"We have advanced significantly in our teleworking ability and our ability to work remotely — and that's a good thing and that prepares the government for something like this," the official told Politico.

The White House, meanwhile, would be hard-pressed to send staff home during a global pandemic.

"Telework? I wish," one senior administration official told Politico. "I haven't had a day off in weeks."
