GOP Congresswomen Playing Key Role in Tax-Cut Effort

By    |   Monday, 23 April 2012 11:40 AM EDT

Republican congresswomen are vigorously assisting the House GOP’s effort to push through a small-business tax cut. Their prominent role serves as a rebuttal to Democratic complaints that Republicans don’t respect women in the workplace.

Reps. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, R-Wash.; Diane Black, R-Tenn.; and Renee Ellmers, R-N.C., are three of the most active congresswomen in the tax-cut campaign, The Hill reports.

“I’m a woman. I’m a conservative Republican. We need to connect with the women of America,” Ellmers told the news service.

“When we see this brought up as an issue, we know we need to come to the forefront and outline these issues. We’re ready to fight for everyone in America, but when we see women under attack, then it’s up to us to come forward and start speaking out with an even stronger, louder voice.”

The activist GOP congresswomen have repeatedly emphasized that women own one-third of all small businesses.

“It’s really exciting for me to see that women are starting businesses at a record pace, and I’m not sure that a lot of people in America are aware of that,” McMorris-Rodgers told The Hill. “I think it’s important to let them know that women are being entrepreneurs.”
