New York Rail System Suffers through Brutal Winter

Sunday, 06 February 2011 10:02 AM EST

NEW YORK (AP) — New York's passenger rail system — the largest in the nation — has suffered through a brutal winter.

New York City subway riders have been stranded for hours aboard stuck trains, beginning with the post-Christmas blizzard that dumped snow on the rails. A popular train line taking commuters between New York City and suburban Connecticut is cutting much of its service because half the trains are in the shop.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority hiked its fares at the end of December for millions of subway, bus and train riders. This week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed slashing another $100 million from the agency's budget.

The agency says it won't raise fares again this year, but is unsure how to make the cuts. Commuters say they are paying more for less service.
