An online fundraising campaign in honor of a Florida high school football coach killed while shielding students from a rifle-toting shooter raised more than $15,500 in its first five hours Thursday.
Donations recorded on the Go Fund Me page showed the fundraiser for coach and security guard Aaron Feis reached $15,554 by 10 p.m. ET; the campaign went live at 5 p.m. The fundraising goal is $20,000.
Feis was one of 17 people killed Wednesday when a former student with a history of mental health problems opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
"To honor his memory and support his wife and daughter during this time of loss and for the future any donation would be appreciated. All donations made to this Go Fund Me Account will be directly distributed to the Feis family," the campaign page reads.
The account managing the fundraiser is led by Douglas Gridiron Club, the athletic booster organization at the South Florida high school.
Another fundraiser launched Thursday by the Broward Education Foundation raised $583,635 by 10 p.m. ET for the school shooting victims. Its goal is $700,000.
"There are no words to express the sorrow that we are all feeling," that page reads. "Donations raised here will be used to provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the horrific shooting."
