$762,000 in Stimulus Money Goes to 'Interactive Dance'

By    |   Wednesday, 21 September 2011 12:16 PM EDT

Recovery.gov, a website that follows the money spent under the Recovery Act, reports that $762,372 in stimulus money will be going to interactive visual dance.

The funds, allotted to The University of North Carolina, will go to their ‘Dance.Draw’ project.

“The Dance.Draw system will enable dancers’ motions, tracked via small RF transmitters worn in satin cuffs, to act as input streams that can be flexibly applied as control parameters for interactive visualizations. The system will log dancers’ motions and will be able to composite video of the dancers with different visualizations, enabling post-hoc analysis of the choreography and exploration of prospective mappings between the motion and the projected media,” the grant website says.

One of the goals of the project is to provide choreographers with the ability to experiment with interact dance without having to have a full cast of dancers present.
