State Dept. Spokeswoman Makes Off-Record Remark on Open Mic

An exasperated State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki was caught on a hot mic bemoaning that a prepared remark she rattled off about a controversial Egypt ruling on Hosni Mubarak was "ridiculous."

Story continues below video.

The Washington Free Beacon reports Associated Press reporter Matt Lee pressed Psaki to comment on last week's decision by an Egyptian court to clear the former president of murder charges in the killing of more than 900 protesters.

The spokeswoman briefly shuffled through her papers and then delivered a straight-from-the-page response.

"Generally, we continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of accountability will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability and economic growth depends," she said.

An astonished Lee then remarks, "Wow, I don’t understand that at all."

"What you said says nothing," he complains. "It’s like saying, 'We support the right of people to breathe.'"

Psaki nevertheless muscled through the rest of the news conference refusing further comment on the issue, and then when the lights dimmed, she told Lee how she really felt unaware her microphone was still on.

"That Egypt line is ridiculous," Psaki said, as Lee is heard laughing right before the audio feed is cut off.

Psaki has always been over her head in her role at State," American Thinker blogger Thomas Lifson wrote Friday.

"But I confess I enjoy her candor here."
