Spike Lee Retweet Leaves Florida Couple in Fear

Wednesday, 28 March 2012 08:49 PM EDT

Spike Lee meant to retweet George Zimmerman's home address, but instead he left an elderly Florida couple fearing for their safety.

The "Inside Man" director's decision already had critics fretting that it could inspire vigilantism, but the hot water boiled over after a Smoking Gun report revealed Thursday that Lee had shared the wrong address with his over 250,000 followers.

Instead of the home of the killer of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Lee's tweet contained the address of Elaine and David McClain. The McClain's son's name is reportedly similar to that of Zimmerman.

Elaine McClain told the website that she was scared that her family would be targeted, and that they had already received a disturbing letter.

"We're keeping everything locked," McClain told the Smoking Gun.

Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch member who shot and killed the unarmed Martin last month in Florida.

Zimmerman claimed he acted in self-defense, but the killing of the African-American teenager has whipped up a debate about race relations.

A spokeswoman for Lee did not respond to request for comment, but as of Wednesday afternoon, the retweet had not been deleted.

The original tweet was sent to Lee and celebrities like Will Smith on Friday by Marcus Davonne Higgins with a request to repost the address. (Editing By Zorianna Kit)
